Changing Electrical Constants of the Fundulus Egg Plasma Membrane
نویسنده
چکیده
Electrical constants of the plasma membrane of the Fundulus egg have been measured with microelectrodes by the transient method. No consistent and significant membrane potential was measured. Membrane capacity averages 0.63 microF/cm.(2) for both unactivated and activated eggs. Membrane resistance averages 3450 ohm-cm.(2) in the unactivated eggs, but increases 2 to 7 times to an average of 13,290 ohm-cm.(2) in the fully activated state. In a hypertonic sucrose solution, the swelling of the egg proper is accompanied by a rapid fall of membrane resistance towards that in the unactivated state. The changes of the membrane resistance are interpreted as probably caused by alterations in the effective pore size in the plasma membrane.

Pressure-volume Relationship of the Fundulus Egg in Sea Water and in Sucrose
Upon activation, an internal hydrostatic pressure develops within the Fundulus egg, and compresses the egg proper to a reduced volume. When the perivitelline pressure is abolished by a highly hypertonic sucrose solution, the egg volume increases. As sucrose penetrates the chorion, the volume again decreases. The relation between P and V in these conditions is inverse, and approximates a rectang...
متن کاملP-73: Effect of Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate and Different Levels of Clove Bud Extract on Motility, Viability and Plasma Membrane Integrity of Ram Spermatozoa during Cooling and Cryopreservation
Background: Hen egg yolk is a common component of most semen cryopreservation extenders. However, diluents containing the egg yolk may have adverse effects on the quality of the semen. Egg yolk could be solubilized by the addition of sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) in semen extenders. Many studies have shown beneficial effects of antioxidants addition to semen freezing extenders. Antioxidants are...
متن کاملSodium Chloride and Selective Diffusion in Living Organisms
1. It is shown that NaCl acts like CaCl(2) or LaCl(3) in preventing the diffusion of strong acids through the membrane of the egg of Fundulus with this difference only that a M/8 solution of NaCl acts like a M/1,000 solution of CaCl(2) and like a M/30,000 solution of LaCl(3). 2. It is shown that these salts inhibit the diffusion of non-dissociated weak acid through the membrane of the Fundulus ...
متن کاملElectrical Coupling between Embryonic Cells by Way of Extracellular Space and Specialized Junctions
The meroblastic egg of the teleost, Fundulus heteroclitus, was studied electrophysiologically from cleavage to mid-gastrula stages. The yolk is an intracellular inclusion surrounded by a membrane of high resistivity (50 k ohmcm(2)). This membrane generates a cytoplasm-negative resting potential in later stages. Cells of all stages studied are coupled electrically. In gastrulae, coupling is both...
متن کاملElectric Impedance of the Frog Egg
Electrical impedance measurements were made upon unfertilized and fertilized eggs of the leopard frog, Rana pipiens, over a frequency range of 0.05 to 10 kc. Average values of 170 ohm cm.(2) were obtained for the plasma membrane resistance of the egg, 2.0 microf/cm.(2) for the plasma membrane capacity, 86 degrees for the phase angle of the membrane, and 570 ohm cm. for the specific resistance o...
